Alot of talk has been stewing in the pot lately about Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao being considered one of the greatest fighters, if not the greatest figher the world has ever seen. That is, if he effectively dismantles fellow pound for pound juggernaut "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we have all heard this type of praise and hype before, I mean just a couple of years ago floyd was that dude, but there were questions. This talk of the greatest of all time, greatest of an era, has all come up before, true this will probably be a fight for the ages, we're talking 2 of the biggest names in boxing clashing for the rights to be the MF man. We hear the same things every decade about this fighter or fighters that are christianed with the mantra greatest of our era, greats ever, and here recently pound for pound king, who either makes one question the possiblities, or question where the heck did they get this bumb? Yet, every decade a bunch of us write articles, and pay good money to hopefully see a spark of greatest, feeding the appetite of this mythical green eyed monster who's hunger is never satisfied.
So, to all you mouth breathers, speculators, and sit at home judges who fan the flames of this pseudo fire of hype, I ask the question,
What Makes a Fighter Great? No!, for real, I want you to tell me, if you can, what is it that makes this type of brick stay in place?
Is it that one mediocre fighter can beat a bunch of other mediocre fighters? Maybe its because one really good fighter, that does his homework, can beat a bunch of lesser fighters who probably should have made a different career choice in the first place. Oh!, I know, it's because a really really good fighter has beaten maybe 2 or 3 half way decent, push'em to the limit type fighters, who they should beat anyway, then effectively destroyed a few former "greats" who have lost a few steps and probably shouldn't have been in the ring in the first place....yeah that's it!
That's what makes a fighter great.
The greatest is defined as "highest in quality". So, being the anomoly doesn't make one fighter great. It just means that he's a freak of nature like Shaq, Labron, and Dwight, and has the capacity to think beyond the line of scrimmage or jump ball. While everyone else is simply average, Lol, I love them guys, but how fair is that? lol!!
Quality is defined as a degree or grade of excellence or worth; The essential and distinguishing attribute of something or someone.
So, in making claims or assumptions about one fighter being classified as the greatest of anything. The quality of his opponents has to be closely scrutinized.
With that, I say that in order to be the "G.O.A.T" you have to beat the greatest of all time. The opponents he chooses to fight need to be of close quality or equal caliber to him, testing his intestinal fortitude, wits and ability to dig deeper fight in and fight out. Until that happens we realist will have to settle for boxing games like Fight Night in order to quench our thirst for this elluding answer. Oh, and put the stick down, the only way to even get a glimpse of the truth it has to be computer controlled, lol, and even then you'd have to question it.
I do believe that one can be the greatest of a decade and surely when it comes to Pac-man and Pretty Boy Floyd squaring off one of them will answer the question of being one of the greatest of the decade. By the way, I am a fan of both fighers.
What do you think? What makes a figher great? Enquiring minds want to know.
Until Next time,
Bob and Weave!!!!!!!
