I’m tired of the whole Floyd Mayweather is this, and he’s that stuff, but I feel as if I have to add my two cents. Many people are being ruled by their hate, so to speak, they have for Mayweather, which is why he will never be a good fighter in their eyes. They will continue to say that he is dodging someone, and that he’s scared, and he runs, and etc. But when your mind is clouded, it’s hard to see what you’re really looking at.
Mayweather in my book is not the greatest of all times, he is one of the best now, and can add to his legacy, to further advance his status on the mountain of greats. He can still go out and defeat a Shane Mosley, a Miguel Cotto, an Andre Berto, and add to his legacy. Since he’s proven he can fight at 154 pounds, he can even fight a Sergio Martinez, Kermit Cintron, Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland, Yuri Foreman, etc. There are still people out there that will add to his resume and make him greater in the long run. Did you notice I didn’t add Manny Pacquio?
I didn’t add Manny Pacquio, not because the fight wouldn’t add to his legacy, but to separate the two. If they don’t fight, they’ll both still go down as two of the greatest of this era.
Floyd started at 130 pounds, where he became the WBC Super featherweight Champ after beating Genaro Hernandez. He defended the title 8 times, and during that span, he demolished an undefeated title holder by the name of Diego Corrales.
Floyd moved up and beat Jose Luis Castillo for the WBC Lightweight Title, which I thought he lost. They fought again a little under 8 months after that and Floyd dominated.
He moved up again to take the Light Welterweight Title from Arturo Gatti, which was one of the finest displays of a boxing clinic I’ve ever seen. He defeated DeMarcus Corley on the way.
He moves up and defeats Zab Judah, and then Carlos Baldomir for the Welterweight Title, and went directly up to Light Middleweight to take the WBC Light Middleweight Title from Oscar De La Hoya.
He decided to take a break after this fight, but before he was gone to long, Ricky Hatton, an undefeated Light Welterweight Title holder, challenges Floyd to a fight. They fight in the Welterweight division, where Floyd KO’s Ricky Hatton in the 10th round.
I don’t see how this resume isn’t worthy of a few congratulatory words.
Floyd is a trash talker, so I understand why he’s not liked by many, and why so many want to see his 0 in his lost column changed, but I don’t understand how they can’t see how good his skills are.
He’s been criticized for so many things, and they discredit his fights, but if you look at his resume, there’s no way you shouldn’t be able to see what he did. He went from Super Featherweight, all the way up to Light Middleweight and remained undefeated. If it’s that easy, then why has it not been done by so many more? They say he never fought a true Welterweight, but he went after the guy who was holding the strongest title in the division, when he beat Carlos Baldomir. They say Carlos didn’t deserve the title and got lucky when he took it from Zab Judah, but Floyd beat Judah before he beat Carlos, so why would it have mattered if Judah still had it?
They say Floyd was picking on a smaller guy when he fought Ricky Hatton, but Ricky made taunting remarks about Floyd, and stated he wanted to fight him, so they criticize Floyd for taking the fight? They also criticize him for making Ricky come up to Welterweight; didn’t Oscar make Floyd come up to Light Middleweight? No one criticized Oscar for that because the world loves him. Wrong is wrong, so either it’s wrong for everyone, or for nobody, I would respect it either way, but not both!
From the time Floyd went from the light Welterweight division up to the light middleweight division, he had said he wanted to fight Shane Mosley twice, but Shane basically said he didn’t want to fight him. Floyd becomes a big PPV attraction, which means his opponents get paid whether swell, NOW MOSLEY WANTS TO FIGHT HIM, but since Floyd says no, he’s ducking him?
Most of the garbage that's spewing from these boxing forums, and sports pages are utterly biased and down right ridiculous.
Floyd at one point wondered why Oscar was making more money than he was, so he set out to prove he was better than him, and he did. I can’t sit here and blast this man for what he didn’t do because of what he did. They sit and say that on his way up, he didn’t beat the best fighters in the divisions he passed. I wouldn’t either, when my plan is to get to Oscar. Not one of those fighters in those divisions would’ve got him to where he is right now like Oscar did. After he accomplished what he set out to do he decided to kick his feet up, he deserved it, he had been fighting all his life, so does he not deserve to sit back for a little bit? Oscar wanted to have a rematch, and since Floyd didn’t except it, he was ducking Oscar 2, WTF.
Floyd is the most talked about fighter right now, and all the people out there that are saying Floyd is this, Floyd is that, Floyd is scared, Floyd has no heart, remember one thing, you keep saying Floyd. You keep Floyd’s name in the headlines, and in people’s houses via internet. They say that word of mouth is the best advertisement, so I wonder, do you guys secretly like Floyd, or is Floyd just that good at marketing……Think about it.
